In a lot of ways, this could make sense, if the publishers plan to play it smart. Namely, offer the small news flashes online and save the paper, and use the magazine for the in-depth articles that cause most people to glaze over when they read them on the Web. (You know: the ponderous, bloated, completely humorless articles for which "Fortune" writer Peter Elkind is best known.) It all depends upon whether the crew at "Fortune" actually wants to keep the magazine afloat, or if they're going to tear it apart with ego-driven infighting. My bet's on the latter.
